Keeping your dogs teeth clean and healthy can be challenging. Most dogs do not particularly like having a human pull up their gums and stick foreign objects (toothbrushes) into their mouths, and can you blame them?

So how exactly do you keep your dog’s teeth healthy and clean and what can go wrong with a dog’s dental health?

Some dental problems are easy to spot. Bad breath, bleeding gums and inflamed mouth are obvious health problem signs. If your dog displays any of these symptoms, needless to say you should seek immediate vet assistance.

bad breath in a dog can be a sign of an oral infection however it can also be a sign of other illnesses such as kidney failure, nasal infection, cancers or diabetes so its important to have your dog thoroughly examined.

Dogs will build up heavy tartar on their teeth as they don’t brush their teeth like we do to remove the plaque. Giving your dog particular foods will help alleviate tartar build up. Foods such as raw chicken wings and legs are excellent for dental health in a dog.

You can also buy special dog toothbrushes. Although your dog will resist at first, I find most dogs get used to the daily routine so make sure you do it regularly. Getting a toothbrush with a double or even triple head makes the job easier as you can brush the whole mouth in one clean. Make sure you use a special dog tooth paste.

You can also purchase special dental toys or dog dental chews which the dog chews on. The toys are developed to remove build up on the teeth. This is a great habit to get your puppies into as puppies generally love chewing on toys and they have the added benefit of providing dental health.

A dry kibble food is also good for cleaning the teeth. It will scratch away tartar and dirt. I recommend giving dog’s dry food once per day.

These are just a few of the things that you can do to ensure your dog has great dental health for its entire life.
