Companion Dogs and the Senior Citizen
In the past it had been suggested that companion dogs for senior citizens are not a good idea. Cited of course were their needs for exercise, the danger of being underfoot and causing an elderly individual to trip and fall, and of course the possibility that the elderly individual might need to go to the hospital and nobody would be available to look after the pet. Fortunately, this notion has changed and just as there are dog breeds which appear to be perfect for children think of the Golden Retriever, Miniature Schnauzer and Jack Russell Terrier there are some breeds which appear to be specifically adaptable to the elderly.
Since many people are now living longer, healthier lives and since exercise is one of the building blocks of a healthy life including the golden years the presence of a companion canine will go a long ways to ensuring that the senior gets that exercise on a daily basis. With so many individuals now connected to their communities by way of neighbors, church members, and also extended families and friend networks, finding a pet sitter when needed is no longer as difficult as it was once considered to be.
One of the most beloved breeds for seniors is the easy to please and good natured Cocker Spaniel. Even though they have little patience for young children and are not very enthusiastic about loud, boisterous sounds, they are exceedingly loyal to their adult owners and enjoy brisk walks just as much as cuddling on the sofa or in bed. Since they do well being very active one day and then are content with a few days of only going on walks rather than having a lot of exercise, and since they are perfect in small surroundings just as they will feel at home in a large house, they are indeed a great addition to a senior citizens household.
Those who might not be as active as they once were but still want that companion with whom to share daily walks albeit just around the block a couple of times will treasure the Bichon Frise. The name when translated means curly coated lapdog and this breed most certainly lives up to this reputation. They are playful when the occasion presents itself, but will be content with spending hours sleeping on the sofa or by their owners feet. Seniors who love to fuss a bit will enjoy brushing the Bichon who will turn into putty during that time. Since they do not shed unless their coat is left to grow long, this is also a great breed for the individual who might suffer from allergies.
If gushing over a pet is what makes you tick, then a Yorkshire terrier might fit the bill.
They are very small, low maintenance, require only walks if your energy level is down, and enjoy being pampered and loved as much as they enjoy a nice treat here and there. It is noteworthy that they like to be kept warm and close, and special bags are for sale at pet shops that permit for them to ride with their owners and virtually accompany them anywhere and everywhere.
