Ever since the beginning of time, and for always, dogs will be considered as man’s best friend. But what happens when your four-legged best friend suddenly hurts a family member or even you, with the most painful bite? You may not believe it, but there are a number of reason that is accountable for being attacked by your own lovable and often friendly pet dog.
Violent change in behavior of your pet is commonly caused by a situation where your dog feels threatened or uncomfortable. Just like any typical human, dogs too, love to have their personal space. Cornering your pet in his leash may irritate him; also, forcing him to do something he does not feel like doing is not a great idea and may provoke him to bite.
Just consider times in your own life when you have become extremely upset with family members or others that you care about. Was there ever a time that you lashed out at someone because they used something of yours without permission? Maybe it was something that you would not allow anyone to borrow under any circumstances.
Like you, your dog also tends to be possessive over his things. Your doggie’s food, bone, toys and bed are his prized possessions, take them away and he will be quick to bite. Anybody, including you, who approaches your dog’s valued resources are perceived by your pet as a threat and will become a potential bite victim. So if your dog is busy splurging on his favorite breakfast or munching on his favorite chew toy, don’t even think of grabbing his bowl or taking away the toy, well, not unless you want a bite.
It’s common knowledge that pet dogs are playful and lovable, always showing off their latest tricks. That’s why we love them! They are definitely a source of laughter and entertainment. But getting excited and running around dogs can trigger their predatory instincts to chase and eventually bite. Yes, we call that animal instinct. Even your gentle Labrador pup is capable of biting your hands if his instincts call for it.
The thought of catching rabies from dog bites is surely a scary one, much worse when you’ve caught it from your beloved pet dog. Therefore, you should familiar yourself with the three categories of dog bites listed below:
1. Casual contact. There are no signs of puncture in the skin. But, a dog licking your skin can expose you to rabies.
2. Abrasions and scratches. An open wound that comes in contact with the dog’s saliva falls under this category as well as contact between your mouth and the dog’s saliva.
3. Visible wounds. Punctured skin and lacerations; this category also includes wounds in the neck and head. This last category is the most severe.
To avoid dog-bite accidents from happening during dog interaction, always remember these dos and don’ts when playing or hanging around with your pet:
Be calm and quiet. Do not disturb or surprise your pet dog when asleep or at play.
Always be gentle when petting. Do not attempt excessive hugging or kissing with your dog because it may irritate him.
Communicate with your pet. Learn to read your pet dog’s feelings and body language.
When your dog shows off his tricks, give him a treat to encourage him.
Avoid leaning or stepping over your dog. Pain is one way of provoking him.
Avoid too much running around with your pet dog.
