Famous Dogs We All Come To Know And Love

There are many dogs that become endeared not only to their owners but also to the public at large because they are in some way put in front of the world to view. Dogs are used in commercials to sell products, seen in films and movies or are characters on television programs. There are dogs who are athletes, dogs who are heroes and dogs who perform service to humans and are remembered for their dedication to their tasks, their are fictional dogs that come to life in books and comic strips, and dogs that are mascots for sports teams and universities. There are also famous war dogs and dogs in the entertainment world as well as dogs used in politics. There are dogs known because they have famous owners. No matter how these dogs have become famous, we all have memories that make us smile and have a famous dog to thank for that.

Perhaps the most well known are those dogs that are in film or movies or on the TV screen and seen by audiences all across the world. Dogs such as Ben (II) a Golden Retriever who appeared in many films such as when he played “Shadow” in the Homeward Bound Movies. Buddy another Golden Retriever, starred in the Air Bud series of movies. A Siberian Husky played the roles of Demon in Snow Dogs and Max in Eight Below. Small dogs also have had their share of fame such as Moonie, a Chihuahua, who played the role of Bruiser in Legally Blonde and Legally Blonde 2.Who could forget Higgins who played the leading role of Benji in the movie Benji as well as in the TV Series Petticoat Junction.

Terry is a Cairn Terrier, who played Toto in the 1939 movie, “The Wizard of Oz”.

TV famous dogs include Pete the Pup who played in the Our Gang (Little Rascals) series, and Rin Tin Tin a name given to several German Shepherd Dogs starring in many of the Warner Brothers film and television shows of the same name. Strongheart started in White Fang, and The Return of Boston Blackie. The show Full House had a Golden Retriever named Comet, played by Buddy. The popular TV series 7th Heaven had a dog named Happy who was played by a dog named Happy. There were two dogs that played Eddie on the show Frasier, Moose and his son Enzo. The popular PBS show Wishbone featured a Jack Russell Terrier played by Soccer.

There are two famous athlete dogs that are noteworthy Ashley Whippet, who was the first disc dog, and canine athlete of the 70s who was 3-time winner of the Canine Frisbee Disc World Championships. Mick the Miller, was a racing Greyhound known as the first greyhound to race in England. He was first raced by a parish priest, Fatgher martin Brophy and then owned by Mrs. Arundel H. Kempton. Mick the Miller won five classic races and broke four records. He was the first dog to ever win the English Greyhound Derby twice, first in 1929 and then again in 1930.

Famous rescue dogs such as Balto, a famous sled dog made a serum run across Alaska to combat an epidemic and Barry, a famous Saint Bernard has been credited with rescuing 40 people as a rescue dog. There were 350 search and rescue dogs that worked at the site of the World Trade Center following the attack on September 11, 2001.

Laika, Belka, and Strelka are all famous space dogs.

Famous war dogs are Bamse from WWII, Chesty who is one of the official mascots of Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C., Chips the hero wardog from WWII, Judy who served in the Royal Navy, Just Nuisance another Royal Navy dog who officially enlisted, Lava, adopted by the 1st Battalion 3rd Marines and honored in the book “From Baghdad, With Love”, by Kopelman and Melinda Roth. Smoky was a war hero dog of WWII who served in the 5th Air Force in the Pacific.

What makes these dogs so famous? Is it the fact that they have been brought into our homes and hearts through the marvel of books, movies and TV? Are they famous because they first did something unusual or brave? We are endeared to them because they did memorable things, were heroes or touched our hearts and made us feel something. Dogs have a way of tugging on our heartstrings, even when they are only known by an image on a screen or a page in a book.
