So You Want To Train A Show dog

There is just something about showing off a dog that you are proud of. Dog shows give owners the chance to show the skill, beauty and training invested in their dog. There are all breeds of show dogs. Shows have a purpose and that is to find the best bloodlines, the best trained and dogs that have the best dispositions.

If your dog is not yet in the show circuit, your first step should be to contact a local kennel club or pet association. These two groups can direct you to local shows and get you started on what should be a very rewarding showmanship journey.

When showing your dog, you will need to know and follow the rules and regulations for your particular area. There are common acceptable practices and special vaccinations or veterinary testing that may also be required for your dog to have in order to participate in dog shows in the area.

Wonder if your dog is show dog material? There are some common traits that all show dog winners have including the ability to perform the correct postures for sitting, heeling, trotting and standing. Dogs, depending on breed may also need to jump over or overcome certain obstacles.

To have a winning dog, your dog should be patient, be able to be relaxed during judging. The dog must not fidget or move while being handled by the judge. Dogs involved in dog shows should be able to get along well with other dogs as they will be among many different dog breeds, walk alongside and be close to many dogs of all sizes, shapes and dispositions. There must never be any show of aggressiveness while around other dogs or when being judged.

Always have your dog professionally groomed just prior to the dog show so that your dog will be putting his best paw forward.

You will want to have with you your dog’s favorite toys and treats for after the dog show to express your appreciation for your dog’s efforts.

Tips on showing your dog:

You will need to register your dog if you plan to show at AKC events. You will need to know both the sire (father) and dam (mother) of your puppy or dog and they both must also be AKC registered. Even if the breeder registered the litter, you still need to register your individual puppy.

Make sure you bring your puppy to obedience training school. A show dog has to be on its best behavior.

You will also need to take handling classes if you intend to show your dog yourself. Local breed clubs offer classes. If you do not wish to handle your dog yourself, you can hire one. The breeder you got your puppy from or your local breed club can give you some names of handlers.

You will need to have a competent groomer that understands how to ready your breed of dog for dog shows. Your dog will need to be bathed, clipped, brushed, styled, nails clipped, ears cleaned, teeth brushed and fleas removed.

Make sure you take time to educate yourself about dog shows. Go to as many as you can before your first show to familiarize yourself with the proceedings. Observe the action inside and outside of the ring.
