Protecting Your Dog By Teaching Basic Commands

Most of us would agree that a well trained dog is a better pet. It simply makes your life more enjoyable to have a dog that listens to your commands and obeys them. It is also very cute to see a furry friend that ‘shakes hands’ or pretends to be shot. And watching dogs run through obstacle courses can be entertaining. But did you know that basic training can protect your dog?

Let’s face it, we all enjoy having dogs that are properly housetrained. This saves us from worrying about finding the unthinkable in the middle of our floors or perhaps behind the sofa. Because of that, this is one of the first things most dog owners teach their pets.

Dogs that chew on things can do a lot of damage to our belongings or even to our homes. But besides that, a dog that chews on inappropriate items can also be putting himself in harm’s way. An example of this is a dog that chews on electrical cords or poisonous plants.

Of course, it is up to the dog owner to keep cherished as well as harmful items out of the dog’s reach. When we add a fur baby to our family we should understand that our homes have to be dog-proofed.

Just as we would do if a new baby was coming into our lives, we should go through our home one room at a time to discover and remove anything that could potentially harm our new pet. And we should work at keeping things out of reach that a dog may enjoy chewing on – things like shoes, purses, belts, etc., and instead, provide plenty of toys and appropriate chew things. Whenever our dog finds the ‘wrong type’ of chew thing, we should make an exchange with a toy or something else that is designed for dogs.

All of these training tips are wonderful but perhaps the most important you can teach your dog is the meaning of the words ‘stop’, ‘no’, and ‘stay’. If you think about it, these three little words can be used in many instances to save you trouble and to even save the life of your pet.

Consider dogs that run out the door at every opportunity. While this can present an annoyance to the owner, it can also present a huge risk to the dog. Not only is there a possibility that the dog will get lost or stolen, but there is the chance that he or she will run into traffic and get injured or even killed.

If you can simply work at teaching your pet that no, stop, and stay mean to cease whatever it is that he or she is doing you could possibly prevent future tragedies from happening. This will give you peace of mind and it will result in a better behaved dog.
