When It Comes To Dogs, What About…

If you’ve never owned a dog before you probably have some questions about some things that most dog owners think are obvious. This could include such things as a dog’s diet, how to housetrain a dog, how often a dog needs to see a vet, and a whole lot more. In reality, these are issues that even some dog owners do not fully understand.

To begin, providing a healthy diet for a dog is not as simple as offering him or her dog food. In relatively recent times we have learned that dogs have specific needs at varying stages of life. Common sense tells us that younger dogs in general are more active than older dogs, and therefore, they need a diet that can help provide them with the energy they need.

If an older was feed the same food they would tend to put on weight. And although we generally think a ‘fat’ dog is cute, it is not a healthy state of being for them. Fortunately nowadays there are various dog food formulas available for us to choose from.

While having a dog that is well trained is wonderful, having a dog that has at least been taught the basics is essential. Housetraining falls under this category.

The good news is that most dogs learn to use a puppy pad, (or pee pad) or to go outside to do their business very quickly. The easiest ways to housetrain a dog is through the use of a dog crate. The dog is kept confined and let out at specific times to take care of business.

Some people are opposed to crating dogs so they may choose to simply keep a close watch over the dog and to take him or her to the chosen bathroom spot at the right times. In general, dogs need to relieve themselves shortly after play or other excitement, 15 to 30 minutes after eating, and almost immediately upon waking up from a nap or a good night’s sleep.

Does a dog need his or her own bed? Most owners will agree that yes, dogs like to have a place to call home within your home. Dog crates are often used as the dog’s den. The crate is loved by the dog because it is his private area. It is comfortable and contains a favorite toy or two as well as a treat. However, some of the happiest dogs sleep in bed with their owners.

Just like humans, dogs need medical care and monitoring of their health. Puppies need frequent visits to the veterinarian in order to receive vaccinations to protect them from various illnesses and concerns. All dogs should visit the vet at least once a year, but preferably every 6 months. If there are health concerns these visits should be more frequent. Dog insurance is available. This can help with some of the costs involved in caring for a furry friend. Monthly costs related to health care include flea prevention measures and heartworm medications.

Believe it or not, although these are basic facts, many people – including those that own and love dogs still have misconceptions about many of these things. Never be afraid to ask questions regardless of how simple the answer may seem. After all, dogs are important to us and the more we know and understand the better care we can provide for them.
