Potty training dogs is a lot easier when they’re cute little puppies. Everyone seems to have their favorite method, but these tips and tricks should help you get started on the right path.
Starting when dogs are very young has a number of advantages, and if at all possible this is the best way to achieve success. The main reason for this is because they haven’t gotten into any bad habits yet, so you won’t have to de-program them and then re-train them again.
Puppies have a way of taking in food and water and then getting rid of it soon after. If you can get this timing down you’ll have half the battle won. Usually within 15 minutes of eating, you’re puppy will be looking for a place to eliminate. It’s your job to make sure the pup knows where that place is.
Since we know that a pup needs to go almost right away, it makes sense to feed and water him when you have the time to spend afterwards with him. It helps to get them into a routine anyway, so develop a pattern and then stick with it.
Of course, that’s not the only time your pup will need to answer the call of nature. Other times might be when he awakens from a nap, or you get him out of his crate. A walk before his bedtime is always helpful as well.
Be aware that things will not always go smoothly when you’re potty training your pup. Accidents are bound to happen and should be attended to promptly and without a lot of fanfare. The days of rubbing a pup’s nose in his mess or a whack on the snout with a newspaper are long gone. This will only serve to make your pup fear you. Ignoring bad behavior and rewarding good behavior is the way to go. Your pup will naturally learn what’s right and always try to please you.
Potty training dogs can sometimes be a real challenge. You need to have patience while the pup learns the routine and develops more control of his bodily functions. This can happen at different ages for different breeds. Keep in mind that at the same time you’re teaching him about potty training, you’re also building a friendship that will serve you well during obedience training and in other areas too. Always show love and affection, and give heaps of praise and rewards for a job well done.
When it comes to training older dogs, you may need a little more patience. Bad habits may need to be broken before you can begin the routine of training him the right way. There is one small consolation. Older dogs may need less frequent trips outside, and this certainly helps when it’s raining or snowing out!
Potty training dogs can be quite a challenge, but with right attitude and a little patience, combined with the tips here, you can have your new pup housebroken in no time.
